Data Analysis in IRAF - Echelle spectra reduction and calibration

Welcome back in the sweet misery of data reduction

Great news to everyone - After finishing the last step of this post you should end up with perfectly reduced data (but I would like to highlight the word should because there will be a number of steps I am not certain at all).

Data Analysis in IRAF - First reduction steps

Hello again

After all, we are prepared for actual processing so I would like to write something about basic steps of data reduction in IRAF which should be applied to all kind of data (photometric, spectroscopic..). These steps are focused on removing the detector 'finger print'.

***NOTE***
I was working with data from ESO archive, obtained from ESO VLT, specifically from its UVES spectrograph. For this reason, all the examples will be for echelle spectra from ESO. Though, main differences for other kinds of data will not be very relevant in this part of processing.

Data Analysis in IRAF - beginning

Hi,

this post (and a few more) is the reason why I created this whole blog. I would like to write something about analysis of astronomical data in IRAF software and to point out steps which were most problematic for me as a first-time-user of this program.

Websites you should see before or during reading this blog (or before your data reduction):

***WARNING***

This is not a manual and I do not guarantee that this is exactly what you should do with your data. As the sources of all wisdom in this post were used IRAF manuals obtained mainly from this link but there is also a lot of other websites, blogs, forums etc. where I was looking for help. I hope this post will be helpful to you and if there is anything wrong/something you are not certain of feel free to send me an e-mail or leave a comment.

***NOTE***
If you have already installed IRAF and know the basics like what is package and how to edit task parameters you can skip the introduction and basics parts right to my next post - 'Data Analysis in IRAF - First reduction steps'.

Observation and Modeling of Planetary Nebulae Spectra

Hello world,

my first serious post is out! I am pretty excited that I can share with you my first astronomical project. It is quite long and it contains a lot of (really amazing) pictures and I am too lazy to upload it right here so I have uploaded it on my Drive and (as I hope) you can find it here:

Observation and Modeling of Planetary Nebulae Spectra

if you have any questions about this project feel free to leave a comment or to write me an e-mail.

Have a nice day
and also life.

Under construction

Dear lovely person,

I am really glad you found your way to my blog. Unfortunately, as you can see, there is nothing to see yet. But (and this is one great BUT) in a few weeks, you will find there some mind-blowing posts about Science and whatever I will be interested in at the time.

Have a nice day (and also life) and see you soon.

PS. If you have any ideas/comments/suggestions how to make this blog look better feel free to leave a comment or write me an e-mail.
